One sleep tool that can eliminate 80% of your child’s sleep struggle.
Let’s talk about one thing that if you do it correctly will set you up for success. It is very common knowledge over internet so it is not something my secret sauce. It is the first thing I ask a mom, It is your child’s wake window!
What is a wake window?
It is the amount of time your baby and toddler can be awake before his/her next recommended sleep time. These wake windows only apply to daytime sleep. Please don’t follow them during the night sleep that can be very adventurous .lol
Why is it important to know your child's wake window?
When the baby is up beyond this stretch of time the baby gets overtired and it becomes challenging to get them to sleep and stay asleep. The other flip side if your baby is getting too much day time sleep and wake windows are shorter than recommended range then also your baby will have struggle falling asleep.
So, now that you are convinced how important is wake windows let me share with you wake windows by age.
0-3 months- 40-90 minutes
3-4 months - 75 minutes -2hour
5-6 months - 2-3 hour
7-14 months -2-4 hour
14- 24 months- 5-6 hour
Now, you know the wake windows by age and you see a range, this is because every baby is different and every day may be different in first few initial months. But don’t worry and don’t loose me yet. If you are confused and you have never followed a wake window, it’s okay, I have a plan for you, you should start with lower range and observe how your baby is responding and increase the range accordingly. You may have to play with it. For younger babies their sleep cues will help you determine when it’s time to put the baby down for naps.
What is a sleep cue?
Sleep cues are signs your baby displays to show he is ready for a nap. The signs listed below are in the order your baby shows from just enough tired to being overtired.
Content and playing for some time
Starts to stare at one place
Starts to zone out
Pulling ears
Rubbing eyes
Constant yawning
Crying
Clingy
So when you are confused on the wake window range these sleep cues will help you determine that your baby is ready for nap or not. You have to prevent overtiredness in your baby that will actually help him fall asleep and staying asleep.
So, when you have your baby's wake windows figured out and voila you have a day time plan for your baby. I promise you it's that easy! Don't get stuck with the range, experiment with it and be flexible.
